Self-portrait

Referencing the assigned reading and the Video Art viewed in class, create a self-portrait under 4 minutes in length. Use sound to create a 1 minute rhythm track. Edit visuals to this track.

This is an experiment in self-depiction in which you create an audio rhythm track along with a visual representation of your “self” as subject, object, canvas, medium, etc.

The project’s focus on the interaction between audio and visual and is not intended as an attempt to literalize the idea of the “self” but a way for you to explore what it means to represent the “self.”

Audio:
To create your rhythm track you can use a variety of sources: non-linguistic vocalized sound (muttering, mumbling, screaming, etc.), sounds of the body (sounds of organs, muscles, joints, etc.), and sounds from your environment. If you choose to use music you may not use the whole intact piece. Remember, your rhythm track must be one minute in length.

Visual:
You can work with images (moving or still), patterns, or colors that are symbolic to you. You may want to use home movie footage, found footage, or original footage, and/or still images. Props/objects, sets, costumes, etc. can establish an iconography that can become symbolic, or create a kind of private mythology. Remember, you will edit your visuals to your audio track. Your video must be under four minutes in length.

Considerations:
You might think about at what age you want to represent yourself, or what point in time you will represent: a past, present, or image a “future” self. Also, consider the “self” as something that becomes visible through codes and conventions of “being” “visibility” and “audibility.”

Your Project will be graded on the following basis:

Concept and Creativity- 25%
Has the artist thought about the project critically and developed a response unique to their own experience? Does the artwork clearly communicate something to viewers? Is the response thoughtful and creative? Or, is it overly predictable?

Understanding and Execution of the project- 25%
Did the artist carefully consider the project and its objectives as described in the syllabus. Is it well executed? Is it well thought out? Does it make sense?

Craftsmanship - 25%
Does the artist display attention to technique and detail.
Does the artist skillfully manipulate the images? Are all details carefully finished and/or intentional-looking?

Effort and Improvement - 25%
Commitment and work ethic.
Did the artist work hard to improve their knowledge and achieve the results they desired? Is the student asking questions to gain a better understanding? Is their project personally challenging? Has the student been using class time to their advantage?
